Obscure

Obscure.
Obscure came out of the plinths. Every one of these was made here for a previous job, mostly 3D printed or hand built with some cut from paper, and they were kept rather than skipped once the shoot was over. A plinth is made to be looked past. It exists to hold a product at the right height, so on its own it has no reason to hold a frame, and the forms have to carry the composition with nothing standing on them. So I treated them as the subject. Arches, tubes, stacked strips, fanned card, pleated fins, an oval aperture and columns, printed and made by hand, then gel gradients run across the forms as well as the ground so one plinth carries two or three colours at once. Hard light gives crisp shadow lines under the arches, and the compositions stay frontal and near flat with complementaries deliberately clashed.

Plinth photography built this way has more than one output. These are also sold as ultra high resolution digital artwork, and I like that a plinth made for one job can end up as a commissioned image, a set piece and a print. The plinths are still in the studio, stacked where the last job left them. The series carries on whenever one of them looks like it has another picture in it.
