Hugo Boss Bottled.
GQ wanted editorial imagery on Boss Bottled, and the point of that bottle is its shape. One bottle shows you the shape. Many bottles show you the shape is an icon. Repetition is easy to get wrong. Identical objects in rows go flat, and any error in spacing or angle reads as sloppiness rather than as pattern. So the set was gridded and every bottle placed to the same tolerance, then lit low and hard from the side so each one throws a long shadow. The shadows make the rhythm, not the bottles. On a bright white ground with strong reflection the ranks recede and the array reads as mass instead of a line-up.

We shot the fragrance several times in different formats off that one idea. One frame raises a single bottle on a plinth in front of a chorus line of others in warm gold, which puts a hero back into the crowd. A darker variant sits on crumpled charcoal fabric, and an overhead on white leather-grain board adds droplets and a splash. Violet, chrome, gold and black across the run. The same thinking runs through my other fragrance range photography. Shot in London by David Lineton.
