The Scent of Light.
Shot for The Orange Square Company across the brands they represent. The idea was to let the fragrances direct the scenes, so each bottle got a room and an hour rather than a background. Light is the difficult subject here. A room lit evenly says nothing about the time of day, and a shadow soft at the edges says nothing at all. So the shadow became the subject. Window bars, foliage dapple and leaded panes were cut and thrown hard across textured plaster and brick, with warm tungsten-gold interiors set against cool green-grey ones so the set could move from morning to late afternoon without moving house. The bottle sits inside the light rather than being lit by it, which is why the product never has to be the brightest thing in frame.

Rebecca built those spaces for us, and the props carry the hour as much as the light does. Folded towels, a travertine block, a vintage camera, dice and cards on a wooden card table, cut-crystal decanters, wisteria over still water. The same use of shaped hard light runs through my other cinematic fragrance photography, including the Musk set builds. Stylist and set design: Rebecca Smith. Shot in London by David Lineton.
