Brummell, Watches of Desire.
An editorial series for Brummell, Watches of Desire. Desire is the brief, and desire is a hard thing to light. Separate watches shot as separate pictures have to run as one spread. Vary the treatment for each and the series stops being a series. So there is one device, run all the way through. A single hard shaft of light cuts a diagonal across a coloured ground and bisects the watch, half of it lit and half of it in shadow. It hones the eye in and turns each frame into a spotlight moment. The composition stays identical and top down every time, and only the colour changes, teal, mustard, sage, grey, dusty pink.
Minimal fill, which keeps the contrast punchy and leaves each watch one clean specular on case and crystal. Lift the shadows at all and the beam stops reading as a beam, so the shadow side is left to go where it goes.
