Eyeland.
Charm chains, sun and moon pendants, small hoops and rings, all made to be worn, all photographed without a wearer. Jewellery laid flat loses the thing that sells it, which is how a piece sits on a body. A model solves that and brings casting, hands, skin tone and a day of retouching with it. Plaster casts of hands and one foot stand in. They are set pieces as much as they are stand-ins, laid down, propped and mounted on plinth blocks, so the pieces get a body to hang from and the frame stays a still life I can control.
Matte chalky white against small bright speculars is the whole picture. A warm side key throws long soft shadows across a plaster textured backdrop and gives the casts their form, and two frames drop onto a darker brown ground so the series does not float away in white. That way of handling gold jewellery photography carries into the rest of the work on the jewellery and watches page.
