Starbucks Pistachio.
Starbucks launched pistachio globally across hot and cold coffees. The brief from TBWA\London needed one visual world the whole range could live inside, and hot and cold serves do not naturally sit together. Green on green is the key consideration. The nut, the cream and the backdrop sit within a few steps of each other, and a set built in one hue collapses under flat light. I lit for separation, holding the cream as a surface and keeping the layers legible through the glass. We built the flavour rather than garnishing it: a sculpted terrain of pistachio paste dotted with whole nuts and shells, the Frappuccino and latte set into the folds, and one frame nesting a cup inside an enlarged shell used as architecture.

The oversized pistachios were made by hand for the set. The refraction and the cream happened in front of the lens, and the motion ran on the same set under the same lighting on a motion control rig repeating the camera move exactly, so the films and stills came off one setup. The same approach runs through my commissioned coffee photography and the rest of the Starbucks seasonal work, including Starbucks Lavender. Model maker: Mandy The Maker. Shot and directed in London by David Lineton, for global release.
