The Balvenie 40 Year Old.

Here Design art directed the Balvenie 40 Year Old. A hand carved wooden set was built for it, sculpted into contours, with the bottle intertwined in it. I explored the bottle visually within the framing of that set and delivered stills and motion. Carving only exists as relief. Light it frontally and the contours vanish, so rare whisky photography on a set like this stands or falls on the angle rather than on the source. I ran the key hard and low across the carving so the ridges take a specular line and the troughs drop away into shadow. That gives the set its depth and, at the same time, puts a dark ground behind the bottle, so the glass and the liquid separate without needing a second light on them.
