The Bubble.
A test day shot with the Schweppes hero liquid. The point was to find out what the liquid is, how it behaves and reacts, and what effects it will give you. Carbonation is small and short-lived. Bubbles cling to a cube face for seconds and then go, and at macro distance the depth of field is thin enough that a face is either sharp or it is not there at all. So I lit from behind and worked to the bubble rather than to the glass. Backlight through the liquid makes each bubble a lens instead of a speck, with an iridescent violet and magenta gel split across a cool ground so the fizz picks up colour as it rises.
That gives the bubble curtains clinging to the ice, a mass of air held in a teardrop, foreground bubbles thrown right out to soft orbs, and two wider gin and tonics to anchor the set. Carbonation photography like this reads as a texture library as much as a hero set, and it feeds the commissioned work afterwards.
