A Seasonal Fit.
This is a personal series with no client, styled and art directed by Yvonne Acho. I wanted to make seasonal campaign images for shoes using nothing but props and lighting, so the season had to be carried by material and light rather than by a location or a brief. That is the whole problem in one line. Without a set to build or a place to shoot, a single shoe on a sweep has nothing to be seasonal against. So I balanced the season around it. Each frame is a sculptural tower stacked on a plain sweep, cork bark, birch log, pumice, an apple, seed pods and autumn debris, with one fashion item worked into the stack, a shoe last or a black leather flat. The stacks are physically balanced on the day and stand on their own.
One hard raking light does the rest, throwing a single sharp shadow across a wall gradient painted by hand, cool grey running into ochre or dusky pink. The contrast is textural before it is tonal, matte natural matter against glossy black leather, and a coiled orange cable is used as a drawn line curling out into the foreground to break the stack. This kind of still life assemblage photography feeds straight back into how I build commissioned product work. Stylist: Yvonne Acho.
