Starbucks Core.
The everyday core serves for Starbucks, through TBWA\London. The brief was morning: build the atmosphere of a sunrise in the studio and let the familiar drinks sit inside it. Warm and cold in one frame is a colour temperature problem. Push the sunrise far enough to feel like morning and the iced serve goes muddy, hold the ice clean and the morning drains out of the picture. I cast two washes of light. A sunrise gradient behind, orange into white glow, meeting a cool blue-white foreground surface, with a strong central glow behind each cup working as a halo to lift it off the join. Scattered clear ice with defined shadows on the table, and a dry-ice layer sitting low around the base.

On the motion, the movement combines a frame by frame move into an in-camera time lapse, so time passes and the ice melts as the sun comes up. It ran on two motion controllers, which let the lighting and the camera move independently and kept that dynamic in the films. The same thinking carries through the rest of my coffee campaign photography for Starbucks, including the seasonal work. Director: David Lineton. DOP: Paul Waterworth. Moco: Mr Moco.
